Personal Development for Leaders

As a leader, you know that the first organisation you lead is the one inside you, don’t you? What we commonly call ‘I’ is really a Committee of Selves.
A metaphor comes to mind: imagine a soccer team. One day the defenders aren’t playing their part, because they want to be strikers, so they keep trying to take the ball. One player keeps getting red carded. The goalkeeper is disengaged and not even paying attention to the game. His own teammate scores on him, and he doesn’t even attempt to block the shot. The teammates on the sidelines instead of supporting their team are shouting “you’re an idiot!” interspersed with profanities… Sounds like a dysfunctional team, doesn’t it? And yet for many people, this is what is happening inside them on a daily basis.
Contrast this with another team who believe the best of each other, communicate well with one another, are compassionate and encouraging, and are ready to help each other out whenever called upon, because their focus is for the good of the whole. They become elite performers and go on to win the World Cup.
We have many parts of us, and like in any organisation, unless they are all on board with the same vision, mission, and strategy concurrently (do you know how rare that is?) conflict will arise. They may want different things, or have different ideas about what way is best to reach the same end goal.
The way we communicate throughout that conflict makes a huge difference. In the Intrinsic Brilliance™ method the coach often acts as an unbiased mediator, facilitating a dialogue between these various parts. Each one, in their own perspective is ‘right’.
And thus, one of the outcomes of personal work is to transform the dysfunctional soccer team (which is what happens when we don’t connect and communicate with Self regularly) into the elite performers.
Mindfulness meditation can serve as the mandatory morning meetings you have with the team – the different aspects of you – to ensure everyone is on the same page and aligned to the agenda and priorities for the day.
