The #1 Success Secret: A Level Head

“They are so annoying”.  “I can’t stand the way they …”.  “That really irritates me”. “I’ll show them”. “They are making negative comments”.

All these kinds of statements set off an emotional state that will lead to no good – for you and the other person/thing.

Your emotional state is EVERYTHING.  It is the BE ALL and END ALL.  If you want expanding success in life, relationships or business, you absolutely must develop self-mastery (which is another way of saying ‘self-control’) and learn to master your emotions.

You will have heard people say, “you have to keep a level head”. You can’t think clearly when you aren’t the Master of your emotions.

You know this is so on some level. You’ve had one of those days when you ‘get out of bed on the wrong side’, have had a ‘bad hair day’ or a ‘bad shave day’. Don’t your results match your mood?  I’ll say no more.

‘Mood’, ‘frame of mind’, ‘state of mind’, ’emotion’, ‘intention’, all these expressions are referring to the same thing and create the quality of your experience.

It’s tricky to change your mood when you have a thought that triggers a bad mood, so it’s better to start in a good mood.  So, before you even start the day, before you even decide what to say or do, choose the quality or emotional state that is optimal.  In NLP (ask for an info sheet on ‘what is NLP’) this is referred to as ‘Setting your Intention’.

You may not fully appreciate how powerfully your mind follows the instructions you give it, but it does.  You’ve heard the expression, “I’m looking forward to …”.  This is the structure of how we instruct our mind to do certain things.  We make pictures of the outcome and our mind takes that as the instruction to create that result.

So, how about ‘looking forward to’ something you will be happy with. As you look forward to the day ahead of you, or the event you’re about to go into or the response you’re about to make, you can ask yourself, ‘what is the best state (mood) I can be in to engage with this’?  Perhaps it is ‘calm’, or ‘composed’ or ‘thoughtful’ or something else.  Whatever it is, see yourself responding in this manner.  Neuroscience supports what Einstein said, “Anything the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve”.

The best time to do this is just before going to sleep, because the brain replays experiences while you are asleep – in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex- over and over and over to create a memory.

So, I invite you to try this: before you go to sleep, be aware of the things you have on for the next day and ask, “what is the best state possible to deal with these things?”, and see yourself at the end of the day having done the day like in that mood, and be surprised how your brain can make that happen for you.

This process – Intending Quality – is just one of the 50 Indispensable Elements of Success in Your Success Code, our online mindset gym.
