Here at the Intrinsic Brilliance Institute we’ve decided that each week we want to share a new song that inspires us to think, explore, feel or reflect.

Why are we sharing music? Well, you may or may not already know how amazing music is for enhancing brains power.

We know from brain scans that the brains of professional musicians are more symmetrical. And the areas of the brain responsible for motor control, auditory processing, and spatial coordination are larger.

Listening to music improves mood. That is to say that it can lower the stress hormone cortisol and increase happy neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopamine you may know from chocolate, orgasms and the exercise high.

Listening to music with others also stimulates more oxytocin, also known as the trust molecule, which can help you to feel generous and patient with others.

Music helps us complete tasks more quickly and with greater efficiency. Listening to sad music can be cathartic, especially if you belt out the song karaoke style.

It can even help with memory loss and is particularly well known for helping Alzheimer’s patients, but is also used to treat autism, dementia, chronic pain, emotional trauma and a variety of other illnesses including depression.

Those that listen to music and learn music, particularly in early development, will find that it can increase IQ, test scores, spatial intelligence and language development. And it doesn’t just have to be Mozart. All music, any music has these wondrous effects.

The bottom line is music is great for the brain. And so we will be sharing some of our favorite songs with you, starting this week with Weightless by Marconi Union.

It’s been dubbed ‘the most relaxing song’ and scientists at Mindlab International found that listening to it resulted in a 65% reduction in participants’ overall anxiety, and a 35 percent reduction in their usual physiological resting rates.

It is also often said that Marconi Union created the song alongside sound therapists to ‘help slow a listener’s heart rate, reduce blood pressure, and lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol.’ So press play on the song of the week and let us know how you feel after hearing it.
