Gifts with “Ugly” Wrapping Paper

It’s amazing to witness how frenzied people have become about the coronavirus.

I wonder what would happen if we responded to the climate crisis with the same manner of urgency.

Research reveals that humans tend to only perceive threats when they are immediate and overlook the accumulated hazards. For example, when people smoke, the immediate gratification overrides the long term risk of lung cancer.

It’s also like what my business partner Deb Maes often says, “We overestimate what we can accomplish in a day, and underestimate what we can accomplish in a decade.”

From my perspective, this “pandemic” is exactly what we as a society needed.

The encouragement by governments for people to self-quarantine could save more lives by preventing pollution than by preventing disease.

Factories closing, air travel bans, people not going to shopping malls and buying stuff have all had a really beneficial impact on the environment in terms of significantly reducing carbon emissions.

People staying home, spending more time with their loved ones, learning how to turn inward for entertainment rather than look externally – these are all wonderful things.

If people would release the stress and the fear they might actually enjoy the time at home and find it calming and relaxing.

Rather than judge the wrapping paper as being ugly, let us embrace the gift we’ve been given.

Remember: enlightening up is available here now in this moment, and we’re always just one thought away from it.
